Even though Fiat is not known for making trucks, they do have experience and proved it in the past. Their latest model is the new 2017 Fiat Toro which has been launched in late 2015 for quite a few markets around the World. So far the truck is being made in Brazil where it competes with the Colorado and the Ranger. Unlike the two, though, the Toro is actually based on unibody design, the same that underpins the current Renegade. This is an interesting move because it means it is not as capable as the competition but it is more comfortable and also a lot more efficient than its rivals.
DETAILS
In Brazil, the Toro starts at the equivalent of $35,000 so it is noticeably more expensive than the competition. However, it is also better equipped, so the value of the truck is right up there with the best in its class. As we mentioned, the platform is the same as that of the Renegade. However, the truck is 26 inches longer than the small crossover which is quite obvious from the start. Despite that, it is more than 20 inches shorter than the Colorado, so it is not a big truck by any means.
DESIGN
In order to be a successful truck, the 2017 Fiat Toro had to do all the usual truck duties without any flaws. This means that despite it is just a unibody truck, it offers little over 2,200 pounds of payload which is just as much as the competition. The tow capabilities are a lower than the average of its class but the Toro can still be used for pretty much any mundane tasks without any problems. The big win here is the design. In the front, it looks like nothing else on the road with two sets of headlights which really give it a unique appearance. The grille offers a unique hexagonal design flanked by the actual headlights. The lights on top are in fact the daylight running lights. The bed has been integrated into the body for a flush look and it features storage spaces for tools or equipment.
INTERIOR REVIEW
The cabin of the Toro is a lot more similar to that of a car than anything else. Here, the truck offers a really similar experience to the Renegade. Some of the controls have been borrowed from it such as the air conditioning knobs, the infotainment system, the steering wheel and even the instrument cluster. However, the center stack is unique to the Toro and offers it a more upmarket feel than the competition.
2017 Fiat Toro ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
Currently, the 2017 Fiat Toro is being offered with two different engines which are both quite impressive for its size. The base model of the truck gets a naturally aspirated 1.8 liter inline 4 which churns out an average 138 horsepower, the same as on the Renegade. This particular engine is being offered with front or all wheel drive on the top end model only and it can only be mated to a six-speed automatic. The option comes in the form of a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 diesel which offers a much more impressive 170 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. This not only gives the truck better fuel economy but it also feels much faster than the petrol engine. Unlike the base unit, this can be had either with a six-speed manual gearbox or with a nine-speed automatic. For the manual, both front and all-wheel drive are available. However, the automatic can only be had with all-wheel drive. If it will ever hit the US market then we are quite sure that the diesel will be discontinued and replaced with a turbocharged petrol mill better fit for the US customers.
