The ongoing version of the Tundra has been around for nearly a decade and it shows. The truck is no longer as efficient and as powerful as some of its competitors but it still is as rugged as ever. Many said that the upcoming 2017 Toyota Tundra would be an all new truck. However, this seems highly unlikely at this point mostly because Toyota hasn’t said a word about it. On top of that, there haven’t been any development mules spotted which are strange for a car that would be expected sometimes at the end of the year. Instead, we believe that the 2017 Tundra, and most likely the 2018 version, will be just a minor refresh of the ongoing truck.
2017 Toyota Tundra Price Chassis and running gear
Its chassis, as well as most of the truck’s drivetrain, should be carried over unchanged. The truck will continue to have the same payload in its base versions and it should cost roughly the same. However, there are some strong rumors out there suggesting that the truck may, in fact, receive a new engine, but more on that later. This engine would become the new top end spec and it would cost closer to a heavy duty truck. Some people suggested a starting price of around $32,000 which would be in line with the new Titan xD.
Looks
The current Tundra is not exactly ugly. Through the years Toyota refined their top end offering and the end result is quite impressive. The 2017 Toyota Tundra should follow the design of this generation closely. We expect it to feature the same massive grille in the front, the small headlights raked towards the back as well as the new hood scoop which acts as a ram-air intake at high speed. The cab, as well as the bed, will suffer no changed but we may see the addition of a new TRD model. This could be an off-road version aimed at people looking to use their Tundra on unpaved roads.
The interior
One of the largest selling points of the current model has always been the massive interior and the 2017 update will be no different. This truck should continue to offer up to five seats with a lot of leg and headroom. The higher end models will feature things such as leather and open-pore wood as well as aluminum on the sportier versions. All in all, the Tundra update will continue to be one of the best buys for those wanting the most comfortable cabin on their truck.
Engine
The upcoming 2017 Toyota Tundra is expected to get the same two base engines as the current model. This means that the truck will receive a standard 4.6 liter naturally aspirated V8 with 310 horsepower and 327 lb-ft of torque. The option will be the 5.7 liter V8 offering 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. Both of these are unfortunate among the least efficient in their class. In order to solve that the 2017 update might receive a new diesel engine. This has been rumored for some time but this is the first time when it could be released. Instead of going for one of their own Hino-developed powertrains, Toyota might offer a 5 liter turbocharged V8 diesel provided by Cummins. That’s right, the Tundra and the Titan would feature the same engine. However, we do expect some major differences between the two. Rumors suggest that the Tundra could receive the higher powered version of the Cummins which has not been released on the market just yet. This would be mated to a six-speed heavy-duty automatic and it would likely be offered just with the rear wheel drive models for starters.
