The all new US market Colorado has been launched quite recently at it quickly became one of the favorites in its class. In order to cash in on its success, it seems that a new version of it will be released quite soon. The upcoming 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is not more than just a rumor or a concept. The truck has been spied testing with very little camouflage on it quite a few times so far and the result is rather spectacular. There is still no word on the official release date or pricing but considering how fast things are moving, we may see it in showrooms by the end of the year.
2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Price and specifications
Like we said, its official price is still well under wraps. However, considering that the diesel Colorado starts at roughly $31,000, it is safe to assume that the ZR2 might start at $40,000 or close to that point considering all the upgrades it is going to feature. The truck will be using the same chassis as the regular model but it will come with a new running gear and quite a few exterior upgrades as well. It still is unclear if it will be sold as an all out off-road machine like the Raptor or if it will more like a cosmetic package.
The running gear
Considering that the concept of the truck used King shocks, it is quite safe to assume that the production 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 will be getting the same. However, unique external reservoirs of the shocks might not be used. Instead, the truck is likely to use the already available King shocks which have been available as an upgrade for the regular truck since 2015. On top of that, considering all the spy shots, we expect the production version to feature standard 17-inch rims wrapped in high-performance off-road tires.
Design
The concept, and the development mule, both featured a rather interesting setup for the suspension where the front is lower than the back. On top of that, it seems that the truck will receive a unique front bumper that will allow for better approach angles and it is also expected to receive a new hood. Both the front and rear wheel arches seem to be wider as well in order to accommodate the wider tires. So far it seems that the interior of the ZR2 will be pretty much identical to the production model. The only real differences here might be the addition of a new upholstery to go well with the new color schemes.
Engine
The concept of the truck was using the 2.8 liter Duramax turbocharged diesel. However, the production 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is most likely going to feature two different engines options. The base model is expected to be offered with the naturally aspirated 3.6 liter V6 which has been around for a while now. This currently makes 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque which would go quite well with the high-performance nature of the truck. The option will most likely be the 2.8 liters turbocharged inline 4 diesel. This makes just 160 horsepower but 369 lb-ft of torque which would allow the ZR2 to go in off-road or two large loads without any issues. So far there haven’t been any details on the gearbox of choice. Many suggested GM’s 10-speed automatic but this seems unlikely at this point. The older 6 speed automatic is more likely but it would unfortunately not fir the sporty nature of the truck. We hope that GM will manage to offer a manual on the ZR2 but so far not much has been said about this.
